Reverse Osmosis

If you need to remove problem contaminants from your water, then reverse osmosis is an effective solution that creates clean water suitable for a variety of applications from homes, faucets and restaurants to aquariums.

At Lubron, we provide a wide range of reverse osmosis filters that can help remove unwanted pesticides, microplastics, heavy metals, salt, fluoride, bacteria, sediment, chlorine and pollutants, for safe, clean, pure water.

What is Reverse Osmosis?

Reverse Osmosis is the process of purifying water using a semi-permeable membrane to filter out and remove unwanted molecules, large particles and contaminants from water.

It was developed from the naturally occurring process, osmosis which in basic terms, is about maintaining equilibrium: water molecules pass through a semi-permeable membrane from the side with the lowest concentration to the side with the highest concentration.

Reverse Osmosis is exactly the opposite – it is the process of forcing a solvent through a semi-permeable membrane from the side with the highest concentration to the side with the lowest concentration. The water is ‘cleaned’ by being forced at high pressure through the ultra-fine filter so that only the water can be pushed through, and the contaminants remain.

This is an extremely useful process, both on its own and combined with filtration, particularly in areas that need water that does not contain any impurities, for example, pharmaceuticals, healthcare and feed water to sensitive process equipment e.g., hybrid cooling towers.

Reverse Osmosis Water Filters

If you are looking for a robust filtration system, then the experts at Lubron are here to help with our range of reverse osmosis filters that are suitable for a variety of applications and across different sectors and industries.

Units are available with flow rates between 0.1m3/hr and 200m3/hr, utilising high-efficiency state-of-the-art membrane technology. Reverse Osmosis filters are in regular use on applications that have traditionally used de-alkalisation plants, de-ionisation, distillation and exchange cartridge type processes.

Where the ionic loading of the water is in excess of 500µS, Reverse Osmosis filtration can be more cost-effective than de-ionisation in terms of running costs, with respect to use of acids and alkalis and effluent charges.

Reverse Osmosis water filters, when correctly engineered, have very low rejection rates (effluent to drain) and regenerate costs are non-existent when used on their own. Their efficiency can be increased even further if a water softener is added to remove calcium and magnesium, utilising salt as the regenerate. Unlike demineralisation plants that require acid and caustic for regeneration, Reverse Osmosis water treatments do not need chemicals that are subject to COSHH regulations. There is no effluent to neutralise, and all water can be flushed down any drain.

The technology of our Reverse Osmosis water treatment filters is well proven and will allow compliance with discharge regulations well into the 21st century. In recent years there have been rapid advances in membrane technology including hot water membranes and ultra-high rejection membranes that give water purity levels similar to traditional demineralisation; lowering running costs and increasing reliability.

As well as producing traditional Reverse Osmosis water filters, Lubron produces tandem plants that allow one stream to always be available for service, twin pass units to give even higher purity waters and Reverse Osmosis filters are coupled to electro-deionisation units for ultrapure water.

Units are available to produce demineralised water down to 15 MOhms, together with UV sterilisation for applications in the electronics, laboratory, pharmaceutical, chemical, humidification (both atomisation and ultrasonic), hydroponics, catering and printing industries, together with any other industries that require pure water including dialysis. Nano-filtration systems that partially demineralise water are also available.

Lubron designs and manufactures a wide range of RO plants. The available capacities vary from 160 litres/hour, for applications in the catering industry for example, up to 70,000 litres/hour for industrial applications. The larger Reverse Osmosis systems are always custom made.
